Bernie Kosar opening restaurant in the Flats

Former Browns quarterback Bernie Kosar will be opening a sports bar/steakhouse on the East Bank of the Flats — one of the first tenants annouced for Scott Wolstein’s redevelopment project.

The 7,000 square foot project will be similar to the Bernie’s Steakhouse in Miami.

The 22 acre East Bank project plans to have 250,000 square feet of retail space, including a bookstore, grocery store, fitness center, movie theater, retail shops, art galleries, restaurants and nightclubs.

Between Wolstein’s Flats project and Bob Stark’s Warehouse District project, it seems like the Flats project is farther along. In fact, demolition has already begun.

The problem is that some businesses, such as Larry Flynt’s Hustler Club, refuse to leave. A court hearing is underway with The Port Authority of Cleveland trying to make them leave with eminent domain — something I’m normally against but I’m supporting in this case because I’m such a proponent of the East Bank development.

Although, since customers can no longer touch strippers in Ohio, maybe that will make Flynt pack up his bags anyway. Nah, not very likely. He’s not the kind of guy to just roll over and take it from the government.

Townhouse framing up in The Avenue District

While riding my bike near Rockwell and East 13th the other day, I noticed what looked to be houses under construction in an old parking lot.

They’re townhouses that are a part of The Avenue District, currently under construction. When I think of The Avenue District, I normally think of the construction underway near the Galleria at East 12th and St. Clair.

The townhomes range in price from $255,000 for a 1,260 sq. ft. 2 bedroom, 2.5 bathroom unit to $372,000 for a 2,100 sq. ft. 3 bedroom, 2.5 bathroom unit.

What’s up with the turning bridge in the Flats?

The red turning bridge that links the east and west banks of the Flats, also known as the Center Street Bridge, has been stuck in the open position for weeks now, allowing boats to pass through the river, but preventing anything else from crossing the water.

A drive gear on the bridge has sheared off and engineers are trying to figure out a way to fix it. No date for the repairs has been set.

The only way to get around this is to drive, walk or bike all the way up to West 25th Street and follow the detour signs. Big pain in the butt. Hopefully they’ll figure something out soon…

Watch the Cavs for free at the Q

Last night, I went out to Quicken Loans Arena to watch the Cavs take on Detroit. No, it wasn’t a home game, but you can get into the Q for free during every Cavs away game during the Eastern Conference Finals. The Cavalier Girls, Moondog and the Scream Team were all there as well as thousands of Cavs fans. And beer. And that giant screen at the Q is a lot bigger than the TV in my loft.

The next away game is Thursday and the Q will be open for free again. Doors open at 7pm. Check it out. It’s a good time.

Stark Enterprises moving downtown

Crain’s Cleveland Business announced that Robert Stark, developer of Crocker Park in Westlake and the man with a plan to revitalize the Warehouse District, is moving his company headquarters to West 3rd and St. Clair downtown.

Stark paid $1.3 million for the vacant office building which has had signs at ground level for years, promoting some new restaurant that never came to pass.

Stark Enterprises being located in the neighborhood that they’re going to redevelop should be a great thing for the city and their Warehouse District plans.
